I was looking for a banana pudding recipe I remembered a friend had made years ago. As I sifted through my recipe cards, my mind trailed off to the memories each card held. Each card handwritten and splattered with grease and batter from years in the kitchen. If those cards could talk, oh the stories they would tell.

The recipe box itself was given to me by my mother-in-law at my bridal shower. She included the Adams’ family recipes for me to carry on their traditions as I fed her son.

I found the cards my mom and I wrote together when she was in the hospital undergoing chemo treatments. She wanted to pass on our favorite meals in an effort for her legacy to live on.

And then I found one from my grandmother who is now deceased. One the back she’d left a personal note of care for me.

With each passing card, my smile grew wider and tears brimmed in my eyes. Each recipe represented a memory, a woman I love, and a legacy to carry-on. They are more than just recipes with ingredients to make a meal. They represent quality time, family, and love.

I got to thinking about what is in my Christian recipe box figuratively speaking. What are the ingredients God has given me to share with the world and leave a legacy? Am I allowing God to sift me, mix me, mold me, and make me into the creation He intended?

I envision Him looking at me and adding cups of His love, peace, and grace as well as a pinch of patience and self-control every now and then. Each day a little different as He uses the ingredients He has on hand. Doing my best to follow His “recipes” found in the Word, my life’s recipe box will be full of successes and failures, splattered and torn, but handwritten with love for the next generation to thumb through and maybe tell a story or two. What will your recipe box include?
