As the baby of the family, I grew up thinking the world revolved around me. It helped that I was this cute, stringy, blonde-haired, blue-eyed girl with the biggest grin and the most hilarious laugh. It’s true—I even received “The Most Hilarious Laugh” award from my kindergarten teacher. My mom called me her sunshine because I could light up the room and bring joy, which helped her forget the hardship of being married to an alcoholic.
In 2003, I founded Blue Monarch, a residential recovery program for women and their children, despite having no background in addiction or recovery. A few years before, God gave me a detailed plan for the ministry in a powerful dream, but I was totally unprepared for the hardships ahead. Over the years, the emotional and physical toll became overwhelming, and by 2012, I knew I needed a break. What started as a month-long “sabbatical” at the beach, with just my dog Lulu for company, soon turned into a transformative experience—one that would forever change how I led Blue Monarch and understood my purpose.

I am not a craft-skilled person despite many attempts to become one. I love having artistic skills—sewing, calligraphy, knitting, crocheting, etc.—but every time I try, I quickly become frustrated with how slow I am initially. When trying to crochet a scarf, I make more knots than progress. Once, during a sewing attempt, I somehow got the entire shirt jammed underneath the needle, effectively sewing the shirt into a ball. I see defeat in my mind’s eye, so I think, why did I even start? I give up before I even try and remain without a craft to call my own.
