Well, hello, Teresa and welcome to the Love Offering podcast. I’m so happy to have you.

Theresa (01:05.002)

Hi. Thank you, Rachel. Thanks for that wonderful introduction. I like how you worded all of that. beautiful. Yeah. Yes, yes, yes.

Rachael Adams (01:13.61)

Well, they’re your words. just put them all together. I was telling you before we hit record that I feel like I know you are our writer speaker circles have been so intertwined for so many years. And so this is just a treat to get to actually talk with you and really get to know you. And I’m excited if the listeners don’t know you yet to introduce you as well. You’ve been an unexpected blessing in my life. So tell us a little bit about your life in Wyoming and how you spend your everyday life.

Theresa (01:44.929)

Yeah, so I am a wife and mother of four children ranging from ages 15 to 21 years old. And one’s in college, one’s graduating and two in high school. So it keeps me very busy just tending to running around watching sporting events for one, getting ready for graduations and you name it, all the things with teenagers. So that’s really, that’s, that’s what keeps me the most busy right now, along with the writing on the side.

Rachael Adams (02:16.853)

Yeah, as we’re recording, it’s May and they call it like May-Cember, right? As busy as December is, May is just with Mother’s Day and graduations and school coming out and all the things, but it’s such a sweet season. And I feel like I’m like right in the middle of it with you. I think we were talking and I’d love for you to share the story.

Rachael Adams (02:39.149)

I actually got the chance to endorse a book that you are a part of is called unexpected blessings. And so it’s interesting the tie in between the Bible study we’re talking about right now and this other book and the unexpected blessing of you being able to be with some other writers and collaborate and contribute together to this beautiful devotional. So tell us that story if you would.

Theresa (03:00.19)

Yeah, absolutely. It truly is an unexpected blessing, like you said, which is so fun because a couple of years ago, I finished writing a Bible study that I went through the whole process of bringing it to where we are now, where it’s going to be published in July, having a focus group and writing a query and book proposal and you name it, signing a contract, all those things that take time and we have to be willing to be patient and wait for and pray through.

And in the middle of all that, after the focus group that I had a few women that I am a part of compel, training with compel pro were, and we’re all leaders in that group. I ended up in a chat with them, just asking some questions regarding, rating, maybe my website that I was building at that time, something like that. And we ended up chatting and then they brought, Nicole’s too far. And so there was these five, including myself, five women that were just chatting, chatting, chatting. We decided to, we’re like, I really love the support. Let’s meet once a month on zoom and continue the support. And we did that. And soon, you know, after several months, we were like, we should do something for our readers. Let’s do something together. And it just evolved into what was a 30 days of unexpected blessings that we published digitally in last November as just something that we did through social media. And then it was like, why not go all the way with this ladies, know, let’s do 10 more devotions and create a 40 day devotional that will come out right before Lent, which is perfect timing, you know, and it ties in really well. And so we, it was just a process of saying, yes, yes, yes. And it was like, God was definitely, he made it easy, you know, and collaborating with women make, especially these women just make a process fun and feel not so daunting. And so all of that happens right even before I published the Bible study, which is unexpected, unexpected blessing. And it was just, yeah, very, very neat, very awesome. Love how God works. That’s actually, that is kind of my testimony because when I said yes to finishing the Bible study and doing it, taking all the scary steps that go along with that. It’s like the testimony in that is that when you say yes, God blesses you immeasurably more than you would even imagine or expect. And this is just one of those things where he did that.

Rachael Adams (05:41.525)

Yeah. I love that story so much. And I can’t wait to hear more of that story, but we’re going to take a brief break to hear a word from today’s sponsor. And when we come back, we are going to talk more about the posture of victory. Her Bible study based on Psalm 63.

Rachael Adams (05:58.376)

Welcome back. I’m talking with Teresa Miller. She is the author of the Posture of Victory Bible study that was birthed from Psalm 63. So Teresa, tell us about what drew you to this specific passage of scripture and how it became the foundation of your study.

Theresa (06:15.186)

Yeah, that’s such a fun question. Just a quick background, just letting you kind of know where I come from will make more sense for why I wrote this study. coming up from a Christian upbringing, but yet not a perfect circumstance. And my parents divorced and I spent a lot of time in my 20s healing a lot of just wounds and repressed feelings. And it just, that was kind of a time of struggle for me, but when I came out of it, there was definitely came to a pivotal point of just saying, okay, God, I’ve surrendered my life, but I surrendered my choices to you. And that was really pivotal for me in my life. So we have that kind of really quick background of just coming from a hard place and then surrendering. And my life really did start to turn around at that point. And my faith grew and just things fell into place a little bit more and things like that. And over time, you know, I think that there’s been definitely the process of peeling back layers for healing. Well, because that’s something that we’ll experience for the rest of our lives, you know. But it was probably six or seven years ago that I found myself just feeling so defeated. And we know that to be can really where I mean, it can look like depression, anxiety, discouragement, just those lies that just spin in your head. two days before that, I was standing in the kitchen with my sister and we were talking about Christ’s victory and how, you know, yay, it has, I mean, we have Christ’s victory. That’s something to really be excited about. And yet I saw this disconnect with proclaiming God’s victory and living into it. And I just took that battle that I was facing a couple of days later to the Lord and just said, why I’m a seasoned Christian. I’m a mom. I’m, you know, I’m growing, I’m healthy. I’m a leader and all of these things. Why am I still struggling with this? And so anyway, the Lord just took that honest plea and he led me to Psalm 63. And it’s just 11 short verses that by the time I got to verse 11,it said, in the mouth of liars will be silenced. And it just, it stopped me in my tracks because of the wording. And that was a prophetic statement for Christ return in times. But the Lord is really showing me that it was for also for today is for me now. So I wanted to know how David was so confident in saying that. the answer really, I found the answer in the verses prior to that. So it was his posture. It was his posture before the Lord. It was not just an empty proclamation. And so it’s these 11 verses that created the framework for the Bible study. And what we find in Psalm 63 is something that we find throughout all of the Psalms. But it was just beautiful that it was all right there. And so that’s kind of the layout for the Bible study.

Rachael Adams (09:37.581)

Yeah, well, I’d love you to dive more into like Psalm 63 was written when David was in the wilderness fleeing from his enemies. So how do you think David’s posture in that passage helps us to find peace in our own wilderness seasons?

Theresa (09:51.078)

Yeah, yeah, so wonderful. You know, David was going through one of the hardest times in his life battling, you know, feelings of depression and betrayal and discouragement and all those things at that time. And yet, David was a man who turned in to Christ and he didn’t just cling to him, but he, he cleaved and there’s actually, very similar terms, but if you really look at the Hebrew meaning of each, it’s the cleave has, it’s this with a strong attachment. It’s actually a stronger attachment than even cling is. And you just see this cleaving to the Lord and not, I mean, we also see in the Psalms that David his despair and even crying out to the Lord and his despair, but we always see that he turns that despair over to the Lord. So he acknowledges his feelings. He doesn’t ignore them. He recognizes that they’re there. Basically, he names them and then he turns them over to the Lord. He doesn’t sit there. There is a point in the Psalms that we see he sat in that his despair for too long and was really bringing them down. And it wasn’t until he turned it over to the Lord that he felt the hope that he always experiences that we see throughout the Psalms.

Rachael Adams (11:22.765)

You know, you write that we are anointed to walk in victory and even when we feel overwhelmed by defeat that we can have this victory in our Christian life. So how do you define victory in the Christian life, especially in our everyday circumstances?

Theresa (11:38.513)

Yeah, well, there’s, I said, there’s definitely a difference between proclaiming Christ’s victory, which is ultimately, you know, His grace and, you know, eternity with Him, you know, we don’t, but I have found that in my life and for many Christians that there’s a disconnect between that and actually living into that. So what does living into victory actually look like? And there’s so many things that can hold us back in life. There’s so many, we can claim, proclaim victory and live in defeat. And that is what’s so sad to watch. know, it was sad to see for myself, but it’s hard to see for other people. Christians who are kind of finding maybe their escape in other ways as opposed to really turning to Christ and what are the things that keep us stuck? They could be baggage in our life. They could be old wounds that we don’t want to look at. They could be those hard feelings that we don’t want to face. They could be relationships we’re not willing to confront and work through. So it’s all of those things that kind of take a hold and then enemy really uses and holds and holds us back in those. mean, it was definitely for me, it was just lies spinning through my head. And I was willing to without subconsciously willing to kind of just sit in that and let it, you know, paralyze me essentially. so living in to our victory is really turning that over to Christ and learning and practicing how to lean in to Him for just, okay, Lord, what is it that this is what I’m feeling and be willing to name that feeling and say, invite Jesus into that experience, whatever you’re experiencing and saying that, and allowing Him to kind of heal that space and help you to take that next step. because He has this abundance for us that he intends for us to live into. he does not intend for us to be stuck or finding ourselves spinning our wheels or finding other things that we can turn to to kind of allow our lives to just kind of rest in this plateaued space. Paul says that we’re meant to grow in our faith and Jesus has immeasurably more for us. So that’s really my heart and passion is for the studies that we’re able to live into Christ’s abundance. that directly affects our calling on our lives. It directly affects the giftings that God has given us and how we’re using them to bless others. It’s hard to do that when you’re just kind of stuck.

Rachael Adams (14:46.594)

Yeah. absolutely. And I think that’s, you’re right. That’s the, what the enemy wants to do. He wants to discourage us and defeat us. And so we do nothing at all. And we do stay stuck. And, know, I think, admire you for being so honest about like, okay, I’m going to write a Bible study on something that I actually have struggled with and experienced and something that actually really helped me. Like I can empathize with you and your struggles. And so, you know, talking about anxiety, depression, betrayal. And so for the woman listening right now that is in that place right now, how would you encourage her in that battle?

Theresa (15:23.942)

Yeah, I would definitely encourage her to really just create that space, that time with Jesus, not to run from whatever that difficulty is or struggle that she’s facing, not to give into the lies, but really just to be completely honest and bring those to the Lord because he has healing and we’re all at different levels somebody may be at a point in their life where the healing needs to begin. And then for a lot of us, that’s kind of happened, but we’re just kind of in this stuck place. And so it’s just really allowing Jesus into that space and then just growing that trust little by little as we see that he is trustworthy. He’s able to handle all of the hard things that we bring to him so gently and tenderly and with so much love and compassion for us.

Rachael Adams (16:25.133)

So we’re going to take another brief break to hear a word from our sponsor and when we return we’ll talk about how to practically posture ourselves for peace and purpose.

Rachael Adams (16:40.075)

Welcome back. are talking with Teresa Miller, the author of The Posture of Victory. So in this title, you emphasize posture and I think that’s an interesting word. So why is our spiritual posture so important and how can we position ourselves to thrive rather than just survive?

Theresa (16:56.229)

Yeah, so our posture is really just our, it’s, you know, our hearts posture, but it really has everything to do with our mindset and what we actually believe. You know, we can say a lot of things, but do we really truly believe it? Do we live that out? And I’m a big believer in, I can convince myself of a lot of things, but it’s really my position, my mindset, my posture, and that action that reveals what I truly believe. And so the heart of the study is to really just close that gap of what I proclaim and what I’m willing to able to live out. And so that posture is really, yeah, it has a lot to do with just our mindset and the risks that we’re willing to take that God is calling us into. And that’s kind of what this study is as well. It’s inviting the participant into not necessarily something that they’ve never heard before, but it’s inviting them into to take a closer look and to experience some of what we’re talking about and what David experienced in Psalm 63 in the wilderness and just to, yeah, very experiential and allowing just the reader to also delve in and into that well, maybe a little bit deeper than they have before to pull out from scripture the truths that are going to really truly enlighten them and hopefully transform their thoughts in their lives.

Rachael Adams (18:51.659)

Yeah, that’s the goal. You talk a lot about thriving in our God given anointing and I think anointing is another word that isn’t used very often, at least in our circles and maybe something misunderstood a little bit. So what does it mean to be anointed and how does that identity empower us to live with confidence?

Theresa (19:10.852)

Yeah, so we are as Christians anointed to live in victory. So there’s this big anointing and then there’s kind of the the anointing, the specific anointing that God puts on our our lives. So it’d be similar to like, you know, maybe sometimes we misunderstand calling to, but you know, how what we think about calling is God is calling us to do this or that actually God is calling us to himself. And then from there, we get to go out, go forth. But the anointing is what he empowers us to do for his glory. it’s, it’s very typically, it’s not in the way that somebody else is doing that, the thing that brings some glory, but it’s the way that he has created you specifically with the gifts and those gifts and talents and personality that allow you to walk in a manner that is worthy. Yeah. And of that calling and living into an abundance that he has for us and being able to bless exponentially. So many so much more than we could just in our own with our own ideas or with our own skills and talents, but when he empowers us, that’s a way that we’re living into our victory, into a victorious life.

Rachael Adams (20:46.857)

I’m just thinking, you know, as you as you wrote this study and really lived it out in your own personal life, like this epiphany moment that you had, and then you’re working with your focus group and hearing their how the Lord transformed their hearts and their posture and they walked in more victory. I’d love to hear more about that, like how it really transformed your own life and maybe some of the early readers and then how you really hope that it impacts and transforms the lives of those that are going to continue to participate in the study.

Theresa (21:11.97)

Yeah, like I said, it’s not anything that I didn’t already know, right? I already knew these things. so will anybody that’s looking at, know, who is a seasoned Christian is gonna know a lot of these things as far as when it comes to our posture. But acknowledging, I’ll tell you what was, I think has always been a life changer for me is when I’ve been able to take a look at in complete honesty, what’s going on, what’s uncomfortable, what doesn’t feel good, and actually examine what’s going on and then bring and invite Jesus into that space. And in doing that, I know for me, the anxiety that I experienced prior to writing this study that I just brought to the Lord and said, Lord, why? Why is this happening? I have not experienced that since, and it’s been about six or seven years. And I think it’s just because number one, God is so faithful. Two, it’s a practice. It’s a practice to when we acknowledge something and then we bring it to the Lord, we then see him faithful. And then we remember that for the next time. And we more quickly bring it to the Lord and see that he is faithful.

Theresa (22:46.433)

And so it’s this practice that it really truly is life changing when we can just be completely honest and not run from something or find a different escape other than Jesus. I mean, I think that I see that a lot is just, we can so easily find that escape at the end of a hard day or hard situation. We can run to Netflix or food or alcohol or whatever it may be. Or we can control more. can live in it with a scarcity mindset where we’re going to with hold and control and this and that. And there’s all of these things. But if we’re really honest, if we’re really, really honest and take a look at what is hard and take that risk and bring it to Jesus, then guess what? We’re going to grow. We’re not going to stay the same people. And that’s the whole goal. That’s the goal for us as Christians. That’s how we are sanctified. That’s how he sent Christ sanctifies us. But we have to stop ignoring, running, escaping, but actually taking the risk to turn to him and clean to him as our sole provider, Savior.

Rachael Adams (24:07.693)

I am just wanting to even mine that down even more. If you’re willing to that for the woman listening, like I’m really struggling. I’m feeling defeated. I’m feeling stuck. I’m feeling anxious. I’m feeling depressed, you know, however she may be feeling today. What’s the one step? it just like a prayer? Like Lord, I need you. I’m clean to you. Like, what does that look like in your daily life to just really like, what’s the one step, one thing. So she’s not feeling overwhelmed. Like I can do this? What would that be?

Theresa (24:39.765)

Yeah. So we’re just talking about the woman who just feels stuck then it’s in whatever that feeling is, then it would definitely just continue to take it to the Lord. That would be fully, it would be genuinely take it to the Lord. know, we can wrestle with the Lord with our struggles. He’s not afraid of that. We can be honest with him can feel frustrated and take that to him. We don’t have to worry that he’s going to just because we’re maybe not taking our concerns to him a certain way or maybe because we’re more frustrated or don’t understand. We can take our hearts to him in any way, shape or form. But we do have to do it with a sense of humility and knowing that it really is Christ who is that, I mean, he’s the one who changes our hearts. He’s the one who changes our lives. So just really going to him genuinely and with humility. I know that there’s, I think that just saying, hey, hey, God, what is that next step that I need to take? I don’t know what to do here. Can you show me and then pay attention pay attention to what he’s telling us. I think humility and just really understanding that our place next to God and just that he is God and we are not and he is good and just recognizing his character helps us to turn to him. So and that’s kind of how the study starts is this posture of humility. And I just think that’s foundational really. So it’s just really practicing that, acknowledging who that is and then turning to him and continuing that practice because then we have the practice of prayer, right? Or the posture of prayers comes and then there’s other postures that come after that. again, it’s like taking a closer look at what does that look like for earnest prayer look like what is, I mean, seriously, not just putting out our petitions, but what is earnestly seeking God? What is being desperate for Jesus actually look like in our lives?

Rachael Adams (27:24.523)

Yeah, I mean scripture says call on me and I will answer you seek me and you will find me and so what does that look like to continue and to commune with him and have a conversation with him because he is there he is available and he will guide you through his Holy Spirit residing in you if you are a believer and I’m just thinking as we’re talking about like sometimes victory may not be immediate it will be look like a quite the process and sometimes I even wonder and I don’t want to put words in your mouth, but can the victory even come once we’re with him in eternity? You know, like I just want other women. Yes, you may pray and ask and seek the Lord and he will answer, but it may not always be on your timetable or in the way that you think. Do you have anything to say on that?

Theresa (28:04.681)

Right, yeah. Yeah, it’s, yes, for sure. I mean, a lot of this living into our victory is learning to fully and completely trust his character and who he is and that he has our good at heart. And so when things aren’t going our way or in the way that we want or in the time that we want, that we still know that he has our best in store and that we can trust him. So instead of saying, why is this happening in my life? We can learn to say, what are you doing with this situation? What are you going to do in this? Because you know that he has a purpose in it. And you know that he has, you know, it’s for his, our good and for his glory. So we can just continue to, just to pray in a way that just shows that we trust Him we completely and 100 % trust that he is good and that he will do the good in our lives. yeah, ultimate victory is is not all it doesn’t come all this side of heaven is just little victories one after another of overcoming just hard things and leaning into Christ and just again just learning by through practice that he is a God who we can trust and just praying that we grow in a deeper trust relationship, more intimate relationship with Jesus on this side of heaven.

Rachael Adams (29:42.069)

That segues well, I think into my next question for you. So is there a biblical concept of love that you think applies to this topic today?

Theresa (29:54.447)

I do. think that this is also part of the study, but I think it’s, it’s in our surrender that we even know how to love. It’s our surrender to Christ because he’s the one who loves us first, obviously, but, as we surrender to him, we experience a love that outpours onto other people. And so, and that allows us to love our neighbors. Right, so it’s just that surrender that again, it’s like humility and prayer and praise and it all comes, it comes down to surrendering our lives and abiding in Christ so that he does the sanctifying work in us. And it’s his love that we get to experience and just, I mean, he actually works it out in us. The love that we have for God and this gratitude that we have in our hearts comes from this sense of surrender to Him. He wells it up within us and that overflows onto the people around us so that we can live in a way again that He’s called us to live as Christ followers and fully living into His abundance.

Rachael Adams (31:13.037)

Yeah, absolutely. So tell us Theresa something you aren’t loving right now.

Theresa (31:18.449)

You know, I’m really loving parenting right now. I’ve always loved it, but I know that we’re just moving into new seasons and new chapters. And we have, you know, one that’s graduating. So again, another, it’s, I’m just, I’m looking at shoes in the middle of my floor where I would be like, I have told you numerous times to pick these shoes up. And I’m like, I’m just going to move these over here because in a year from now, they’re not going to be here. You know, that brings emotion to me, but it just makes me appreciate. This is what it is. This is the season we’re in and I love it.

Rachael Adams (32:04.888)

Oh, me too. I’m in a such a sweet season of motherhood too. And I’m even looking some minor 16 and 14, but I’m thinking, gosh, I have two more years with my son and only four more with my daughter before they move out. And I don’t want to miss a thing. um, yeah, I’m loving the shoes too. And it’s a good thing. We’ll celebrate those things. Isn’t it interesting? And I think you bring up a really good point. The things that used to drive us crazy. It’s like we kind of treasure now.

Theresa (32:33.157)

Yeah, it’s hitting, it’s starting to hit on a little more, so yeah.

Rachael Adams (32:34.529)

Absolutely. Dear Heavenly Father, I thank you so much for your presence. I thank you for how good you are to us, that you are constant, that you are faithful, Lord. I just thank you for how you call us into your abundance. And Lord, you don’t leave us alone. You don’t leave us to our own devices. Lord, you are there, you are near, and you are ready to draw us so close to yourself Lord. And so I just pray for our listeners today, just ask that you would just bless them abundantly, pursue them, let them know your love, your kindness, your compassion. And I just pray that they would be willing to take the risks that are sometimes hard and drawing near to you Lord. Our salvation is free of surrender costs us everything. So Lord, I just pray that we would be willing to take those risks and then feel the sense of abundance and reward that you have for us. just thank you for Rachel and her podcast and ministry. Just bless all those who received from her in Jesus name. Amen.
