Turning Burnout into Breakthrough: A Conversation with Vivian Cumins

In today’s fast-paced world, many women find themselves overwhelmed—juggling responsibilities at home, work, church, and beyond. In this episode of The Love Offering Podcast, I had the privilege of speaking with author and speaker Vivian Cumins about a topic that touches so many of us: burnout—and how God can use even our breaking points for restoration.

In her book, Break Down Better, Vivian shares her deeply personal story of striving, exhaustion, and ultimately a mental breakdown that became the turning point in her life. In her lowest moment, when she felt completely depleted, she sensed the Lord gently whisper, “Hold on—I’m going to restore you.” That moment of surrender marked the beginning of a transformative journey from burnout to healing.

Why So Many Women Are Burning Out

Vivian explains that burnout often stems from our desire to be everything to everyone. Whether in our families, careers, or ministries, we carry a constant pressure to perform, achieve, and hold it all together. Many women struggle with perfectionism, control, and people-pleasing tendencies—often believing their worth is tied to what they do rather than who they are.

Over time, this striving takes a toll—not just emotionally, but physically and spiritually. Subtle warning signs like anxiety, brain fog, fatigue, or even physical symptoms can build until we reach a breaking point. Yet instead of pausing, we often push through, ignoring what our bodies and souls are trying to tell us.

When Breakdown Becomes a Beginning

While burnout and breakdown are painful, Vivian offers a hopeful perspective: what feels like failure can actually become the doorway to deeper intimacy with God.

She describes restoration as being brought back to God’s original design—a life not defined by striving, but by surrender. Through her journey, she learned that God never intended for His daughters to live overwhelmed and exhausted. Instead, He invites us into a life led by Him, marked by peace, purpose, and dependence on His strength.

The Power—and Challenge—of Surrender

One of the hardest steps in this process is surrender. For women who are used to managing everything, letting go of control can feel uncomfortable—even frightening. But true healing begins when we trust God enough to release our grip and allow Him to lead.

Surrender isn’t about doing less for the sake of doing less—it’s about doing life differently. It’s about inviting God into every decision, every responsibility, and every relationship.

Living a God-First Life

Putting God first doesn’t always mean long, uninterrupted quiet times (though those are beautiful when possible). It can be as simple as beginning the day with a prayer, inviting Him into your thoughts, or seeking His guidance in everyday decisions.

A God-first life is a posture of the heart—one that continually turns toward Him throughout the day.

Rest Is Not a Luxury—It’s Biblical

Many women feel guilty for resting, but Scripture gives us a different picture. God Himself modeled rest, and Jesus regularly withdrew from the crowds to be alone with the Father.

Rest doesn’t have to be elaborate. It can be found in small, intentional moments—pausing, breathing, praying, or simply stepping away for a few minutes. Taking time to rest is not selfish; it’s essential. When we are depleted, we cannot love or serve others well.

Rediscovering Joy and Enjoying Life

Vivian also emphasizes something many of us overlook: joy matters. In seasons of burnout, we often stop enjoying the very lives God has given us.

Through her healing process, she began noticing simple, beautiful moments—like watching her grandson delight in God’s creation. These small glimpses of joy became reminders that life is meant to be experienced, not just endured.

Leading Without Losing Yourself

For women in leadership—whether at home, work, or ministry—there is a tension between serving others and maintaining healthy boundaries. Vivian shares the importance of caring deeply without carrying everything.

We are called to love others, but we are not called to be their savior. That role belongs to God alone.

Where to Begin

If you’re feeling overwhelmed and unsure where to start, Vivian offers a simple but powerful first step: seek God.

Bring Him your exhaustion, your frustration, your questions. He is not overwhelmed by your emotions—He welcomes them. As you draw near to Him, He will gently reveal the next steps toward healing and restoration.

As 1 Peter 5:10 reminds us: “After you have suffered a little while, He Himself will restore you and make you strong, firm, and steadfast.”

A Final Encouragement

This journey is not about perfection—it’s about progress. There will be moments of growth, moments of struggle, and moments of recalibration. But through it all, God remains faithful.

Even in the breakdown, He is near.
And He is always at work, restoring what feels worn thin.
