Spiritual Children by Leslie Schonfeld

As I walked through the door, the fragrance of my favorite beverage, coffee, greeted me. Beckoning me to the counter, I ordered that brew of the day, black. Although way too hot, I took a tentative sip, tempted by the rich burst of flavor to fill my mouth. I risked the scalding from that first taste.

Grasping my cup, I searched the room for the familiar face I would meet today. The room buzzed with multiple conversations. Over in the corner, I saw her perched on a stool. Her youthful face lit up with a smile, and she beckoned me to join her.

As an empty nester, I love meeting with younger people to listen to their stories. The relationships I’ve developed have grown our family. Our house may be emptier, but our life is full.

We are told to use our freedom, found in Jesus, to serve one another in love. Galatians 5:13 says, “You, my brothers and sisters, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the flesh; rather, serve one another humbly in love.” (NIV) This chapter of Scripture is packed with empowerment that invigorates us to love others. Giving our time is a precious gift.

Older women are called to serve younger women. My friend, if that is you, take up the challenge. Look around you and seek out someone who needs your time. All you need is space on your calendar and ears to hear them.

To the young woman reading this, you are not alone. Our country suffers from an epidemic of loneliness; we need each other. Older women like me desire to build a relationship with you. Initiate the friendship with a simple request to meet for coffee, a walk, or gather at the playground while your kids play.

Yesterday, I video-chatted with one of my young friends. Caitlin, now a mom herself, talked while wrestling with her one-year-old’s will. Every time he saw me on the phone, he laughed and waved. What a blessing to love yet another generation of children.

Through these loving relationships, I now have spiritual children and grandchildren. My years of experience as a parent can encourage young moms with support through listening ears. They don’t necessarily need my advice but a sympathetic ear, so they know they are not alone.

The mentoring adventure keeps me young. It refreshes my faith in ways that no other relationship can. Our intimate time with Jesus fortifies us for the continued conversation with our young friends. Together, we sift out traditions and societal pressures to keep the truth of Jesus Christ in the center of these relationships.

Crossing generational lines allows us to enrich our lives in exciting ways. Our gift of time undergirds the next generation to face life challenges. How beautiful it is when we realize we are better together.

Father, Give me eyes to see the woman you desire to put in my life. Please give me the courage to reach out to her to build something beautiful. In Jesus Name, Amen.
