As the primary caregiver for my husband, battling stage 4 cancer, I often felt like I was on a relentless merry-go-round. Each day began with an emotional toll that was hard to bear, filled with doctor appointments, medication schedules, and the heart-wrenching reality of watching someone I love fight for his life. One particularly exhausting evening, I found myself sitting in my car, tears streaming down my face, feeling utterly overwhelmed.
In that moment of desperation, I recalled the story of Moses. God told him to hide in the cleft of the rock, a safe place to experience His presence without being consumed by His glory. Exodus 33:20-23 (ESV) states, “You cannot see my face, for man shall not see me and live… there is a place by me where you shall stand on the rock.” This imagery struck me deeply; it reminded me that God desires us to be so close to Him that He must shield us from His glory to protect our fragile hearts.
As I envisioned standing in that cleft, I felt the warmth of God’s hand covering me, providing comfort amidst the chaos. I realized I wasn’t just a passive recipient of His love; I was called to be a love offering to the world around me.
Just as I learned to embrace my worth, you can understand that you have something valuable to offer. God created you with unique gifts, experiences, and perspectives that can significantly impact those around you. Your contributions matter, no matter how small they may seem. When you believe in your worth, you align yourself with God’s purpose and find strength in His presence.
The cleft in the rock isn’t just a refuge; it’s a launching pad for love and service. You can open your eyes to the needs around you. Whether offering a listening ear to a friend, volunteering in your community, or sharing your story, you can step out and serve. Your experiences can help others facing similar challenges.
When you find your place in the cleft of the rock, remember that you are never alone. God’s love fills you, empowering you to reach out. As 1 John 4:19 (ESV) reminds us, “We love because he first loved us.” Through your relationship with God, you can extend His love to those in need, even while navigating your own challenges.
My husband passed in July of 2023, and still today, the cleft of the rock is my refuge. It is where I gain the strength to continue sharing my life in service to others through the love of God. Since that challenging time, God has given me a new husband, and together we run to the cleft of the rock to renew our strength to be ready vessels of God’s love and light to others.
As you journey through life, hold onto the image of the cleft of the rock—a safe haven where you can experience God’s presence. Seek intimacy with Him, allowing it to inspire you to be a love offering to those around you. Your contributions matter, and you have the power to make a difference.
When you draw near to God and allow His love to flow through you, you become a vessel of hope and light. So, find your place in the cleft of the rock, and let your heart overflow with love that transforms lives and glorifies His Kingdom. In the midst of life’s trials, may your only problem be that you are so close to God that you must hide in His embrace.
