Have you heard of blue light glasses? They filter out harmful light put off by electronic screens, allowing viewers to see the content minus the harmful light. What if we could look at the world around us and could see what the Lord sees instead of what we see. What if we could look at the world through a different lens, giving us a fresh perspective?
Recently, I told my youngest daughter that I struggled. She responded, “We all do.” She then proceeded to ask me what I meant. I answered, “Look at me, I am a mess!” I hadn’t showered and was without makeup, wearing mismatched pajamas, fixing lunch, while cleaning up the breakfast dishes. I had hurried through my morning tackling my to-do list of chores and hadn’t stopped to gather myself. My daughter looked at me through her loving eyes and said, “Do you know what I see? I see a loving, hard-working mother!” I was humbled and moved to tears.
That encounter prompted thoughts of what the Lord sees and how different it is from what I see. How many times have I seen problems when he sees opportunity? How many times have I seen my child’s strong will as a weakness when He sees it as a strength of character? How many times do I see a dead end and He sees the parting of the Red Sea? How many times have I seen someone, who has hurt me, as my enemy instead of seeing them as another child of God whom He loves?
What more could we be missing by failing to look at the world, and at others, the way God sees them? My daughter’s perception of me was filtered through her eyes of love. God’s Word should prompt us as believers to look at the world around us through loving, Christ-centered lenses. So next time, I pray that we can see past the struggle and let the Son-light shine through us to others.
